Dogs suffer Saturday OT setback to Dinos

Conference schedule continues on January 6th

The Huskies men’s hockey team is looking forward to having some time to regroup after closing out the first semester with a second straight overtime loss to the Calgary Dinos, this time by a final score of 3-2.

One night after the Dogs let a two-goal lead slip away in the third period, they were once again unable to seal the deal against the first-place Dinos. This time the Dogs rallied back in a see-saw final frame, but they still couldn’t find the final goal to secure the victory.

“There was pushback, we went right to the end against a team who’s obviously played really well and has a lot of confidence. But for us it’s still unacceptable because we expect to win every game and so we still have to take some steps forward,” head coach Brandin Cote said.

It was a rather tame affair for the first 40 minutes as both teams executed their defensive game plans. The contest was scoreless until the 15:18 mark of the second period when Alec Zawatsky took a drop pass from Jared Dmytriw and beat Carl Tetachuk on the glove side to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

The Dogs took that lead into the final period but for the second night in a row, they couldn’t keep it. Power play goals by Zach Wytinck and Noah King gave Calgary a 2-1 advantage with just under eight minutes left but it lasted just 90 seconds as Justin Ball answered back on a Saskatchewan man advantage to even the score.

The Dinos had a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation when Huskies captain Connor Hobbs was assessed major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct after a hit on Jake Gricius with just under five minutes to play. But just as they did on Friday when Jeff Faith got five and a game for checking from behind, the Dogs killed it off.

However, Hobbs’ absence loomed large as the game went into extra time.

“It definitely hurts. You’re missing your best player and your captain in the situation you need him to be in,” Cote said.

Saskatchewan outshot Calgary 4-1 in overtime, which went to a second frame, but the Dinos made the most of their only shot on goal as Noah King buried a feed from Connor Gutenburg to secure his team’s 13th straight victory.

The Huskies have earned at least a point in five straight games but that streak includes three overtime losses and they head into the break with a record of 10-4-4 having won just two of their last seven contests overall.

“It’s a reset but there’s always danger in those breaks. Everyone’s gonna go through it so it’s how we handle it and how we come back with a fresh mindset for the second half of the year,” Cote said.

The Dogs will return to action on December 30 in an exhibition game against the Ukrainian men’s under-25 team at Merlis Belsher Place. Conference play resumes on January 6th, when the Huskies visit the Trinity Western Spartans.
