Three of four Huskies’ court sports heading into winter break relatively happy

Between men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, three of the four Huskies’ teams are currently entering the winter break, with at least a .500 record or above.

Men’s Volleyball

The Huskies men’s volleyball team is currently the best of the four, wrapping up the 2022 portion of their season with an 8-4 record.

The Dogs have yet to lose back-to-back games this season and are currently sitting at fourth in the Canada West standings. If that continues until the end of the regular season, the Huskies would get home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

Saskatchewan is also the only team so far this season to hand the 11-1 University of Alberta Golden Bears a loss.

U of S will head into the 2023 portion of the season riding a two-game win-streak. The Huskies visit the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on January 6th and 7th.

Women’s Basketball

Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team is also performing at a high level, holding down a 6-2 record and sixth place in the Canada West standings.

The Dogs have only lost to one team so far this season and that was to their provincial rivals, the Regina Cougars. Since those Nov. 11 and 12 losses, Saskatchewan has won four straight games.

They are back home on January 6 and 7 when the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack visit the PAC.

Women’s Volleyball

As for the women’s volleyball team, it has been a bit of an inconsistent season, never straying too far away from the .500 line (two games at the max), which is where they currently sit.

The Dog’s 6-6 record is currently good for ninth place in the Canada West standings, which at the moment, would place them just outside the playoff picture.

Thankfully, Manitoba and UBC Okanagan are also 6-6, so there are chances for Saskatchewan to quickly move up the standings with some good second-half play.

The U of S will be in tough when they get back to action, Jan 6 and 7, in Vancouver, as they face the 10-2 UBC Thunderbirds.

Men’s Basketball

And finally, it has been a disappointing season for the men’s basketball team, to say the least, as it looks like they won’t be on their way back to the U Sports National Championship game.

As it stands right now, the Dogs are in second last place in the Canada West Standings (16th), which puts them four spots out of the play-in, only sitting above the 0-10 Grant MacEwan Griffins.

Saskatchewan is currently holding a 1-7 record, with their only win coming against the 4-4 MRU Cougars.

That victory was the Huskies’ first game of the season, as they have now lost seven straight.

First-year head coach, Jamie Campbell, will look to right the ship, as the U of S returns to gameplay, Jan. 6 and 7, at home, when they host the TRU Wolfpack.
