The University of Saskatchewan logo. The huskie head. The large “S”. The University of Saskatchewan has one of the most recognizable college brands in Canada. The stand alone Shop USask store at Preston Crossing in Saskatoon continues to sell merchandise, including Huskie athletics apparel, as it has for years.

Get ready to see even more popular Huskie gear around the province and the country in 2023. Huskie Athletics has opened a retail location (The Huskie Store) at Merlis Belsher Place in time for the 2022-23 holiday season. “Our athletic program is now 112 years old”, said Mike Jenkins, Associate Athletics Officer-Development and Marketing. “The brand really hasn’t changed a whole bunch. A lot has to do with the loyal culture mentality of the people that live and grow up in Saskatchewan. That’s just who we are.”

The Huskies have always made merchandise available to fans inside venues such as Merlis Belsher Place, the PAC and Griffiths Stadium. However, the opportunity to have an actual store location in the lobby of the arena gives supporters more access to the very popular fan ware. “We’re a sport crazy province”, said Jenkins. “We saw a unique opportunity to enhance our brand and sell our merchandise.” There is such great traffic here year round. It’s a great space for us.”

Besides getting the edgy gear in to the fan’s hands, the retail location also employs students and gives supporters the opportunity to interact with athletes who are working at the store. Third year Agriculture student and Edmonton product, Rachel Salyn, from the women’s soccer team and first year Arts and Science student, Cheyenne Lehman, also from the women’s soccer team, are among the athletes assisting shoppers with their purchases.

Erwin Loic, a first year athlete from Quebec City with the men’s basketball team, will also be on location. “It’s absolutely important to us to provide opportunities to University of Saskatchewan students”, said Jenkins. “Even more importantly to our student athletes. They’re our greatest ambassadors. To have them in our store interacting with fans and spectators and stakeholders, that’s what it’s all about!”

The Huskie Store at Merlis Belsher Place is now open Thursday and Friday evening from 5pm to 9pm and from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

While the store just opened for the holiday season, it will stay open for the remainder of the Canada West sports season.
