Huskies fall 1-0 to Pandas in defensive battle on home ice

The University of Saskatchewan played a hard-fought, connected game against one of the top teams in Canada West Friday night.

In their first visit to Merlis Belsher Place since October 2019, the University of Alberta Pandas went toe-to-toe with the Huskies on special teams.

Both sides went five-for-five on the penalty kill.

“There were opportunities for us,” Kook said. “And in game like this, against a team like this, you don’t get many. And those are the ones we have to make sure we bear down on.”

Kook acknowledged there were some missed line assignments on the power play. Saskatchewan also incurred two penalties for too many players.

The head coach credited the team’s defensive core, adding that they played their best this season in a fast game.

It took Alberta 12:36 into the third period to break a scoreless tie.

Pandas’ forward Cassidy Maplethorpe recorded her seventh goal of the season, while Edmonton product Sara Kazeil and rookie Abby Soyko from Prince Albert were credited with the assists.

Alberta’s 1-0 win notched fourth-year netminder Halle Oswald her sixth shutout of the season with 19 saves.

Saskatchewan’s Colby Wilson had her ninth start in net this season, also turning away 19 shots.

Wilson and her family were a big part of Friday’s game, which marked the program’s 14th annual Play for a Cure night.

The second-year goaltender lost her aunt, Trisha Larsen, to pancreatic cancer on Oct. 26, 2022.

In Larsen’s honour, the team wore custom jerseys in black and purple, the colour representing pancreatic cancer, which featured Larsen’s initials on the sleeves.

Those were sold, along with silent auction items, to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.

“What they did is way more important than what happened in the game tonight,” Kook said. “They put so much work into this night and it really is player-led.”

Earlier this week, Wilson told HuskieFAN her aunt loved the outdoors and loved watching hockey, given her oldest son was also a goaltender.

Friday’s defeat marks three in a row for the Huskies.

While their record drops to 12-8-3, Saskatchewan maintains sole possession of fourth in Canada West with 27 points.

The Pandas, meanwhile, carry forward their momentum with a now eight-game win streak for a 17-5-1 record and 35 points.

At the time of publication, Alberta holds first-place in the conference, one point ahead of the UBC Thunderbirds.

“This has been the toughest second half of a season in recent memory,” Kook said. “If we’re going to survive against (Alberta) tomorrow night, we need to have the same go.”

Puck drops 7 p.m. Saturday for the rematch at Merlis Belsher Place.

After this weekend, the Huskies have a bye and then host the University of Regina Cougars (3-18) on Saturday Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. and Sunday Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.
