Huskies look to reset with bye after 3-1 loss to Alberta

Jan 21, 2023 | 11:10 PM

The Huskies women’s hockey is heading into a bye week on a four-game losing skid after facing the top two teams in Canada West.

The University of Alberta Pandas (18-5-1) completed their road sweep Saturday night with a 3-1 win at Merlis Belsher Place. The Huskies lost to the conference-leading UBC Thunderbirds the weekend before.

Unlike Friday’s defensive grind that pushed a scoreless tie into the third period, scoring started in the opening frame.

Alberta point’s leader Cassidy Maplethorpe added to her tally twice, assisting Abby Soyko for the opening marker at 9:51 and Jadyn Morden for the second goal at 12:27.

The Huskies responded early in the second period on special teams.

Second-year defenseman Emily Holmes put away her first power play marker of the season to get Saskatchewan on the board at 4:48. Huskies went one-for-two on the player advantage and three-for-three on the penalty kill.

Prior to Holmes’ goal, the Huskies had not scored since early in the first period of their game against the UBC Thunderbirds on Jan. 13.

Alberta regained and maintained a two-goal lead off a goal by Kalli Clouston, assisted by Sara Kazeil, 14:27 in the second frame.

Huskies goaltender Colby Wilson finished the night with 19 saves in her ninth start of the season, while Alberta’s Halle Oswald turned away 15 for the 3-1 Panda win.

Wilson had the team’s last five starts in net as Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever played with Team Canada at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, New York.

“It was a good opportunity for Wilson,” Kook said.

“That’s part of the maturity of of a goaltender. It’s one thing to be in the league and play in, you know, every other game. But when you have the expectations to carry the load, that’s part of the learning process, too.”

Saskatchewan (12-9-3) ends the weekend with 27 points, still good for fourth in Canada West, two points ahead of the University of Calgary Dinos.

The Dinos, however, have two games in hand on the Huskies.

Alberta caps their road trip with 37 points, one behind the conference-leading UBC Thunderbirds, a team that also has two games in hand on the Pandas.

Drever, Pozzi win gold with Canada

Drever and Huskies defenseman Isabella Pozzi helped Canada to a 5-0 gold medal win over Japan at the FISU World University Games Saturday night.

“I couldn’t be more proud of their effort,” Kook said. “They’ll get back and we’re on a bye and we’ll have a chance to celebrate and regroup and go from there.”

Pozzi and Drever will rejoin Saskatchewan’s line-up after the team’s upcoming bye weekend.

The Huskies host their Highway 11 rivals the University of Regina Cougars in a rare Saturday-Sunday series on Feb. 4 and 5. It’s Saskatchewan’s final home weekend of the regular season.

The initial schedule had the Huskies playing in Regina on Friday, Feb. 3, before playing the rematch in Saskatoon.

That was amended, however, after the Cougars hosted the Huskies for both games in their November series due to a water main break at Merlis Belsher Place.

Saskatchewan caps the regular season on the road against the Mount Royal University Cougars in Calgary on Feb. 10-11.

The best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series take place the following weekend, Feb. 17-19.

Huskies will host a playoff weekend if they maintain or improve their fourth-place standing in the conference.
