Chantz Petruic has three point night for Huskies
With veteran goaltender Roddy Ross and third year forward Jared Dmytriw back in the lineup, along with the return of captain Connor Hobbs, the Huskie men’s hockey team was dominant in a 7-2 win over the Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. Ross, who made 12 stops for the win, faced eight shots in the first period as the visitors dictated play early. Jake Fletcher and Jayden Davis scored special teams’ goals as the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead.
Ross hadn’t dressed for the Huskies since January 6th and Dmytriw, not since January 7th, as both players were away at the FISU Games in New York state. Hobbs, who is the Huskies leading scorer, suffered an upper body injury on January 20th and missed the January 21st game against Alberta.
After a less than ideal start, the Huskies took control in the second period. 2nd year forward Chantz Petruic scored twice in the middle frame (once on the power play), while Hobbs added a power play goal as the Huskies took a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play. The Huskies outshot the Cougars 17-1 in the period. “In the second we started to move our feet”, said Petruic. “That’s what we do best”.
Alec Zawatzky found the net mid-way through the third period to give the Huskies some breathing room. Petruic capped off a three point night with an assist on a Vince Loschiavo goal with 1:22 remaining. Defenceman Rhett Rhinehart scored his first goal as a Huskie with 31 seconds left to go in the game. Cougars goaltender Adam Evanoff allowed the 7 goals on 35 shots.
