It was a tale of two nights as Saskatchewan’s Canada West men’s hockey rivals wrapped up their weekend series in the Queen City. On Friday the U of S Huskie men’s hockey team was dominant in a five goal win over the Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place. Saturday’s game at the Co-operators Centre played out much differently as the Huskies needed extra time to defeat Regina 2-1.

Saskatchewan’s coaching staff has emphasized the importance of strong starts and Saturday the visitors did just that as Jeff Faith scored his first goal of the season at the 3:10 mark of the opening period. It was a big weekend for the first year forward from Wilcox. On Friday night Faith had two assists…his first points of the season.

2nd year Cougar Riley Krane tied the game at the 5:28 mark of the second period. The former Moose Jaw Warrior is one of Regina’s leading scorers among forwards with 18 points in 24 games this season.

The goaltenders were spectacular as both teams had their share of chances. Roddy Ross made 27 stops in the Saskatchewan net, while Regina’s Adam Evanoff stopped 29 Huskie shots.

After four on four, then three on three overtime, the Huskies pulled out the win in the fifth round of the shootout. Vince Loschiavo beat Evanoff after Ross denied Regina’s Eric Pearce moments earlier. It was the Huskies 14th win of the regular season as the team sits with 32 points, in fifth place in the standings.

The single point for the regulation tie looms large for Regina. The Cougars are clinging to the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference. Regina and the MacEwan Griffins both sit with 19 points, but the Cougars hold the tiebreaker. MacEwan upset Mount Royal 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night. The Manitoba Bisons are still in the mix for the final playoff spot with 17 points, but finish off the regular season against the very formidable Alberta Golden Bears.

The Huskies end the 2022-23 regular season on the February 10th-11th weekend with two home dates against the Mount Royal Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place. Regina will desperately fight to hold on the conference’s final playoff spot with games in Vancouver against the third place UBC Thunderbirds.
