Saskatchewan took back their final regular season weekend with a 3-1 win Saturday to split their series with the Mount Royal University Cougars.

Scoring opened 12:13 into the first period with a Huskies power play goal from Sara Kendall, her fourth of the season, assisted by fourth-year Isabella Pozzi.

Saskatchewan struck again 6:19 in the second, the eventual game-winner, scored by defenseman Brooklyn Stevely.

The Regina product’s first regular-season U Sports goal was helped by Sophie Lalor.

“It’s about time,” Stevely said with a laugh after the game, adding the team’s energy was “totally different” Saturday.

“The energy before the game was phenomenal. Everyone’s moods were amazing, the bench was awesome. That was honestly the best dressing room we’ve had in a long time.”

Late in the second, Huskies goaltender Colby Wilson made a massive save on a penalty shot awarded to Cougars’ second-year Aliya Jomha.

Jomha, however, did get one by Wilson 7:14 into the third period, assisted again by fourth-year Courtney Kollman. The pair opened scoring for Mount Royal in their 2-0 win over the Huskies Friday.

Last, but certainly not least, the Huskies insurance marker: an even-strength goal expertly stickhandled by Bronwyn Boucher and helped by Calgary product McKenna Bolger.

“I’m super proud of our team for coming back in game two here. After I had that one defenseman beat, I just wanted to get it on net and I just wanted to get it in and it did,” Boucher said.

“I think we really needed a win, especially after our last few games. It’s definitely what we needed and we’re going this on into playoffs.”

In the end, Wilson turned away 33 shots on goal for the Huskies in her 11th start of the season.

Meanwhile, Cougars rookie netminder Scout Anderson, from Saskatoon, made 11 saves during her fourth U Sports start.

Saturday’s game marked Seniors’ Night for the Cougars, who bid farewell to eight graduating players: fifth-year Tatum Amy and fourth-years MacKenzie Butz, Camryn Amundson, Morgan Ramsey, Tori Williams, Taylor Sawka, Laura Cook and Courtney Kollman.
