The Mount Royal Cougars roll over the Huskies on Saturday night
The Huskie men’s hockey team prepares to visit the Mount Royal Cougars in the first round of the Canada West playoffs, and one of Saskatchewan’s best weapons may be to have a short memory. The Cougars beat up on the Huskies, 8-1, on Saturday night in the regular season finale for both teams at Merlis Belsher Place. “I’m disappointed”, said head coach Brandin Cote. “I know our guys are disappointed.”
Mount Royal buried five second period goals on their way to the win. Nolan Yaremko scored three straight goals in an eight minute span in the middle frame, then added a fourth in the third. Saskatchewan starting goaltender Roddy Ross was chased from the net in the second period after allowing five goals on 19 shots.
Mount Royal, who entered the game with the 8th best power play in the 9 team Canada West conference, scored two goals on seven power play chances. Yaremko and Spencer Moe converted on the man advantage. “I didn’t like our lack of discipline tonight”, Cote said.
Connor Hobbs, one of four graduating players to play their last home game at Merlis Belsher Place, scored the lone goal for the Huskies late in the second period. Tate Olson, Jared Dmytriw and Evan Fiala are the other players that will graduate from the program following the playoffs.
