The Huskie men’s hockey team struck first in their best-of-three Canada West semi-final with a 5-3 win over the Calgary Dinos at Father David Bauer Arena on Friday night. Saskatchewan snapped a Dino 23 game win streak in the process.

Calgary’s Tyson Upper opened the scoring at the 9:22 mark of the first period, but Saskatchewan responded with two goals, 2:30 apart before the opening intermission. Captain Connor Hobbs, who earlier in the week was named the conference’s best defenceman, scored to tie the game. Then, with 3:20 left to go in the first frame, Jaxan Kaluski scored his second of the playoffs to give the visitors the lead.

3rd year forward Vince Loschiavo took a big hit, but managed to make a play on a puck to set up the Kaluski goal. “My back was turned to the play”, said Loschiavo. “I just heard JD (Jared Dmytriw) screaming for a chip. I knew I had to take a hit to make the play. Him and Jax did the rest.” “That’s playoffs right?! You got to do whatever you can to win”.

Saskatchewan held Calgary’s offense at bay in the second period, and scored a goal of their own. Jared Dmytriw beat goaltender Carl Tetachuk at the 3:22 mark on an assist from Hobbs.

In the final frame, Huskie forward Jeff Faith was given a double-minor penalty for high sticking and Calgary’s power play connected. Jake Gricius, who led the Dinos in goals scored in the regular season, found the net on both the first and second power play opportunities to tie the game at 3. The goals came exactly a minute apart.

Even though the Huskies let a two goal lead get away, they found an answer when they needed it. Saskatchewan veteran defenceman Shane Collins scored what proved to be the game winner on a centering pass from Justin Ball at the 8:53 mark of the third period. Ball then put one into the empty net for insurance.

Huskie head coach Brandin Cote was asked about the resilience of his team. “Through out the season we haven’t handled those situations as we would like. Now we are getting some thicker skin. The resolve to stay with it and find a way…that’s what good teams do in the playoffs.”

The Huskies outshot Calgary 18-15. Huskie goaltender Roddy Ross collected his third win of the playoffs, making 15 stops in the Saskatchewan net.

The second game of the series is set for Friday night at 8:00pm (Saskatchewan Time) at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
