Dinos blast Huskies in deciding game of Canada West semi-final
The 2022-23 Huskie men’s hockey season came to a crashing halt on Saturday night in Calgary. The Dinos thumped the Huskies 6-1 in the third and deciding game of their Canada West semi-final at Father David Bauer Arena.
Huskie sniper Vince Loschiavo opened the scoring 1:10 into the hockey game. From there it was all Dinos. Calgary made Saskatchewan pay when captain Huskie Connor Hobbs was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for a check to the head on Jaeger White of the Dinos. White laid on the ice for 3 to 4 minutes in the Huskie zone while the training staff tended to him. He was eventually able to skate to the bench on his own.
The Dinos scored twice on the five minute power play that followed. Max Patterson scored both goals at 11:06 and 12:09. “I think there was a trip or slough foot that got Connor a little fired up”, said Huskie assistant coach Michael Babcock. “If you break down the hit slowly, he (Hobbs) is not trying to target the head, but unfortunately that was the main point of contact and the ref has to make a call”.
Calgary maintained momentum after the first intermission, outshooting the Huskies 10-6 in the second period. The Dinos got goals from both Connor Gutenberg and Zack Wytinck to take a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Patterson capped off a three point game with an assist on Josh Maser’s first goal of the night at the 13:37 mark of the third period in to an empty net. Maser followed that up with a power play marker at 15:13.
