Dinos push semi-final to the limit with two goal victory over Huskies
A berth in the Canada West men’s hockey final, and a trip to the 2023 University Cup, is on the line Saturday night in Calgary. The Calgary Dinos forced a third and deciding game in the best-of-three semi-final with a 4-2, game two, Friday night win over the Huskies at Father David Bauer Arena.
The Dinos pulled out a tight game with two third period goals 2:16 apart. With the score tied at one, winger Bradley Schoonbaert scored on a perfectly placed shot, in close, to give the Dinos a one goal edge. “It was a pin hole of a spot to put it”, said Huskie head coach Brandin Cote. “You have to give him credit.” Saskatchewan took advantage of a power play 1:08 later when Justin Ball tied the game at 2. The third year Huskie is having an incredible playoff with 3 goals and two assists in five playoff games.
The Dinos responded in front of their home fans as 2nd year forward, Colson Gengenbach, gave the Dinos the lead for good with 4:56 remaining in the third period. “When there is five minutes left you have to take care of the puck” said Cote. “We didn’t. It was a bad scramble in front of the net and they found a way.”
Calgary defenceman Noah King closed out the scoring with an empty net goal. Riley Stotts scored a first period goal for Calgary while Alec Zawatsky buried a second period marker for Saskatchewan. The Huskies outshot Calgary 33-23.
