University of Saskatchewan track and field pentathlete, Jake Neufeld, was presented with the Male Student-Athlete Community Service Award on Thursday in Saskatoon ahead of the USports Track and Field Championships at the Field House.

Neufeld, who is ranked third in the country, not only coaches an under 14 group with the Saskatoon Track and Field Club, but spends countless hours as a volunteer with intellectually impaired individuals while holding down a 94.3% average in the classroom. “My mother is actually a teacher in special ed”, said Neufeld. “I’ve done a lot of work individuals with cognitive abilities. You learn so much from them. Volunteering with them, they give you a lot more then you’re giving them.”

Neufeld had a no-height in the men’s heptathlon high-jump at the Canada West championships last month in Saskatoon and is looking for a rebound performance this weekend. Huskie coach Jason Reindl has total belief in the third year athlete from Holy Cross high school. “He had a monstrous pole vault, the next day”, said Reindl. “He’ll be looking for a big two days.”
