A bronze medal finish for Huskie women’s track and field team

The U of S Huskie women’s track and field team earned a bronze medal at the 2023 USports Championships on Saturday at the Field House. Saskatchewan finished with 65 points, one back of the silver medalists from Western University.

The Huskies collected two medals in the women’s 600 metres. Saskatchewan’s Avery Pearson won silver at 1:28.83 and teammate Kendra Farmer ran a 1:29.02 for bronze.

Saskatchewan’s 4x200m team of Farmer, Paige Willems, Rachel Albertson, Grace Igbikiwon won a silver medal with a time of 1:37:53, behind Guelph. The U of S women’s 4×400-metre relay team of Farmer, Willems, Pearson and Sarah Schwab added to the medal haul with a silver medal finish in a time of 3:43.73. Guelph claimed gold a time of 3:41.63.

The Guelph Gryphons’ women’s and men’s teams both claimed USports banners for the fifth straight time. Guelph’s women’s team finished with 166 points, while the Gryphon men had 123.

In men’s competition, Mark Bujnowski, of the Gryphons, set a USports shot put record with a throw 19.08 metres. It beat the old mark by 60 centimetres, set by Andrew Smith of Saskatchewan back in 2011. The Huskie men’s team finished in 11th place with 21 points.

Men’s Volleyball

The Huskie men’s volleyball team secured a spot in the 2023 USports championships in Hamilton on Friday night. Saskatchewan defeated Calgary 3 sets to 1 in the Canada West bronze medal match at the PAC to secure the Canada West conference’s third and final spot in the tournament.

Alberta defeated Trinity Western, 3 sets to 1 in the gold medal match on Friday. Both the Golden Bears and Spartans also advance to the USports championships, which runs from March 17th to 19th at McMaster University.
