Four University of Saskatchewan Huskies were chosen in Tuesday’s CFL draft.

Offensive lineman Dayton Black went in the first round, sixth overall, to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Black completed his third year of eligibility with the University of Saskatchewan in 2022, where he was named a Canada West All-Star. Black was a quarterback in his hometown of Brandon, Manitoba at Neelin High School. The 23 year old has played in 30 games as a member of the U of S Huskies and made a successful transition from the defensive line to the offensive line in 2021.

Two Huskies were selected in the fifth round of the draft. Receiver Daniel Perry was selected 37th overall by the Ottawa Redblacks. Perry, who was also a 2022 Canada West All-Star played a key role in Saskatchewan’s second straight Hardy Cup title and Vanier Cup appearance. The fourth year pass catcher had 797 yards in receiving in 2022 and caught a touchdown pass in the Huskies’ dominant 36-19 win over St. FX in the Uteck Bowl.

Defensive back Charlie Ringland was the 43rd overall selection by the BC Lions. Ringland, a fourth year member of the secondary from Winnipeg, had three interceptions in Saskatchewan’s 37-9 win over Manitoba in the Canada West semi-finals last season.

Caleb Morin was selected 67th overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Evan Hardy Graduate completed his third year of eligibility with the Huskies in 2022. Morin had 736 yards in receiving and hauled in a touchdown pass against the UBC Thunderbirds on October 22nd.

Rookie camps for many CFL teams will begin on May 10th with training camps starting on May 14th. The Saskatchewan Roughriders will again be holding training camp at Griffiths Stadium on the U of S campus.
