The Huskies work with younger athletes again this summer
There will be no shortage of action at the various sports venues on the University of Saskatchewan campus again this summer, as the SaskMilk Future Huskies – Youth Camps kick into high gear. Athletes from 12 to 17 years can take part in football, hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball and wrestling camps with elite Huskie athletes.
For the first time ever, multi-sport camps will be part of the program in 2023. “We have three different multi-sport camps this year”, said Andrea Dodig from the Huskie women’s basketball team. “We have our intro to multi-sports. That’s for our younger athletes, ages 10 to 12. Then we have two advanced multi-sport camps. One is advanced basketball, where basketball is the primary sport with others like soccer, flag football and ultimate frisbee. The other is advanced volleyball with secondary sports.
Not only can the multi-sport camps help athletes with their skill levels through the summer months but introduce newcomers to different sports with Huskie athletes. “We here in Huskie Athletics believe strongly in multi-sport activity”, said Michael Jenkins, Associate Athletics Officer-Development. “We’ve heard from a number of new Canadian families and these camps have been attractive to them. Here kids can perhaps learn new sports and get active in our community.”
While camp goers receive instruction from some of the best in their respective sports, Dodig believes Huskie athletes also receive huge benefits from the camps. “These are great opportunities for our instructors to be role models in their community”, said Dodig. “These kids really look up to them and want to be like them at the hockey rink and on the basketball court. It’s an opportunity to share skills and knowledge. It’s also an opportunity for athletes to meet one another and be able to work together. Normally, you’re just with your team.”
