Much of the focus surrounding the 2023 University of Saskatchewan Huskie football season has been on who is no longer with the program. Hec Crighton trophy nominee Mason Nyhus has graduated, meaning there will be a new quarterback in under centre. Anton Amundrud was with the team last season and players who could emerge this season include Mustapha Yekini ,Griffin Sander and Jake Farrell.

Yekini played at Simon Fraser before the program was discontinued after the 2022 season. The Red Deer product has only played American football at the college level however head coach Scott Flory is confident he can make the transition to the three down game. Sander is no stranger to the Saskatoon football scene, playing at Bishop Mahoney high school. Farrell, who is from Yorkton, played varsity football with the Vernon Panthers.

While the Huskies may, or may not, lack experience at quarterback, the team will have a very seasoned supporting cast at receiver, running back and on the offensive line this season. Fourth year feature back, Ted Kubongo, who now has a year of experience under Scott Flory’s offense, will be a key weapon. “We’ve got to make sure that we are insulated enough to make it easier for the next guy coming in” (at quarterback), said Flory. The Huskies may have as many as 10 starters return from last season’s offense.

The Huskies are deep at offensive line, however there is a question at left tackle. Dayton Black, who played in 30 games for the U of S Huskies, was chosen in the first round of the 2023 CFL draft and will remain with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats this season. Flory believes that his team has the depth from within to transition a veteran to the new position. “We are going to have to find out who can play at tackle. I am confident that (offensive line coach Lane Bryksa and assistant coach Tanner Secord) will get someone ready to go.”

Saskatchewan bolstered an already strong offensive line with the addition of Toronto product, John Kourtis. The former NCAA centre, who has a bachelor’s degree in sports management, comes to the Huskies from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. “He’s an inside guy and he can play”, said Flory.

While one defender returns from an ACL injury, another will miss the 2023 season with an ACL injury. Third year defensive lineman Nathan Jule will take on an elevated role this season after getting hurt in the third game last year. The Saskatoon product registered a sack in a 29-10 win over UBC in week two before getting hurt in a week three game against Regina. “He was having an All-Canadian type season”, said Flory. “I know how hard he’s been working. He’s going to have a great year.” The Huskies have also added CJFL defensive player of the year, Reece McCormick, to the d-line.

4th year boundary defensive half-back, Charlie Ringland, will not dress this season after having ACL surgery. The Huskies had already made plans to move on from Ringland anyway, knowing that he was going to be sought after by CFL teams. The BC Lions chose the Winnipeg product in the 5th round of the 2023 draft.

Flory says he and defensive coordinator Warren Muzika already have a plan. “We can move (4th yr DB) Katley Joseph to boundary half”, said Flory. The Ottawa product was named a Canada West all-star in 2022 after having 34 tackles, 1 interception and 1 forced fumble from the corner spot last season. “Finn Marcotte-Cribb is another guy who can play boundary corner as well”, said Flory. There is a plethora of options. “I look at guys (returnees) like Tanner Reiber, Cam Skinner, Nixen Voll, Aiden Sommacal, and some young guys that deserve some playing time (in the secondary) as well” stated Flory.

The Huskies open the 2023 season on September 1st in Manitoba against the Bisons. The team’s home opener is Friday, September 8th against the Regina Rams at 7pm at Griffiths Stadium.
