The late Guy Vetrie and the late Bill Seymour to be honoured for contributions to Huskie Athletics

Former Huskie men’s basketball coach Guy Vetrie is among a distinguished group of people and teams that will be inducted into the University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame on September 9th, 2023 at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Vetrie, who passed away in September of 2003, was the coach with the Huskies in the 1978-79 season then re-joined the team in 1980 and stayed for eight seasons. In 1981-82, Vetrie led the U of S to a 14-6 record. Saskatchewan advanced to the Canada West final and secured its first ever berth to the CIAU national championship. The Huskies would compete in two more Canada West finals and two more national championship tournaments under Vetrie.

The Sault Ste. Marie product went on to coach the Victoria Vikes for 14 seasons starting in 1989. He led the program to the 1997 CIAU championship title. He finished with 485 career wins and was a six-time Canada West coach of the year.

Joining Vetrie in the builder category of the University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame is the late Bill Seymour. Seymour, who passed away in December of 2022, was a two-sport athlete (hockey, football) on campus in the mid 1960’s

He then obtained his education degree at the University of Saskatchewan and gave back to Huskie Athletics in many ways. He joined the men’s hockey team as an assistant coach in 1982 under head coach Dave King. He was with the team for five seasons which included a 1983 University Cup title. He was the interim head coach of the team in the 1990-91 season and also served as interim athletic director at the U of S from 2006 to 2008.

Wrestlers Jillian Gallays and Jeff Adamson will be recognized in the athlete category. Gallays, from St. Brieux, Saskatchewan, was a Huskie from 2005 to 2010. She won gold and bronze USports medals and five Canada West medals in her university career. Gallays went on to join the national team and competed in the 2016 Olympic Games.

Adamson competed for the Green and White from 2003 to 2008. He would win two gold and two silver Canada West medals and two gold and two bronze U SPORTS medals. Saskatoon’s own went on to be a member of Canada’s Olympic team in 2012.

The 1998 Vanier Cup champion Huskie football team and the 2003-04 CIS champion volleyball team from the University of Saskatchewan will be inducted in the team category.
