Training camp begins August 14, Amundrud expected to take reigns as QB1

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie football team is less than a week away from the start of its 2023 training camp.

Football season officially begins on Aug. 14 for the U of S, who are looking to get back to the Vanier Cup for the third year in a row.

“We had a good idea in the spring of kind of where we were at, and the biggest thing with training camp is seeing the progress and building a team. We’ve got a lot of veteran guys, a lot of returning guys, and we’ve got to be able to build that team pretty quickly,” explained head coach Scott Flory.

“We want to make sure that we’re ready to go into week one, ready to play, and prepared on and off the field. These guys gotta come together and do a bunch of team bonding. We returned a fair amount of guys on both sides of the ball, but there’s going to be some new pieces and there’s gonna be some new faces.”

One of the obvious facts heading into the new season is that no matter who ends up being their quarterback, they’re gonna be a little unfamiliar to the Huskie faithful.

With Mason Nyhus now gone behind centre, Flory said they’re expecting Anton Amundrud to take the reigns.

“The big thing for us is just at the quarterback position, making sure that we’re bringing along our young quarterbacks and giving them a chance to succeed on the field. We’re happy with the four guys we’ve got in our quarterback room,” Flory told HuskieFAN.

“We anticipate Anton to take the reigns over, there’s been competition there, but we’ve been grooming him for a while. We expect him to step in and be our number one guy, and then we’ve got a few guys that we’re gonna find out who’s the number two. We’ve got to make sure that we develop and prepare the next guy to be ready to play.”

Saskatchewan’s training camp will include administrative procedures, physical testing, and practice.

It will last for two weeks, before the Dogs play a nonconference game on Aug. 25 against the University of Calgary Dinos.

As far as what fans can expect from the team this year, Flory said not much has changed, as he believes they are as fast as they’ve been, they will continue to play a physical brand of football, they have put an emphasis on creating more big plays, and expectations continue to be as high as ever.

“I think that we’re really excited to get going,” he mentioned. “We have very high standards within our football program, and we’re going to put the best 12 on either side of the ball or the best 24 out there that gives us the chance to win football games. It’s going to be an exciting year.”

The green and white will play their first game on the road this season, Sept. 1 in Winnipeg, against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
