Quarterback Anton Amundrud looked at ease in his first game as the Huskies’ starting quarterback on Friday night as Saskatchewan rolled over the Calgary Dinos 48-6 in Canada West non-conference football at Griffiths Stadium. Amundrud, who has been in this Huskie offense for three seasons, takes over for Hec Crighton trophy nominee, Mason Nyhus.

“It was awesome to be back out here”, said the Lloydminster product “After the first drive the nerves go away and you have a lot of fun.” Fun indeed. Amundrud, who has a big arm, hit Daniel Wiebe on a 75 yard touchdown strike with 4:40 to go in the first quarter to help to Huskies to a 10-3 lead. He then connected with Branson Pipko on a 67 yard strike in the second quarter. Amundrud finished the night with 13 completions on 17 throws for 305 yards and two touchdown tosses. “I was back up last year and red-shirted the first two years, so getting out here and getting experience, I had a wonderful time”, he said.

Saskatchewan coach Scott Flory was asked for his take on Amundrud’s first start as a Huskie. “He is as expected. He made all the right reads.” However, there is room for development according to the head coach. “His arm is so strong, he has to find that touch a little bit. We’re excited for where is at and for his future. He just needs more snaps. Every snap, he’ll get better and better.”

The U of S dressed 70 players for the game, Dinos coach Wayne Harris sent a roster of 65 on to the field. It was a perfect night for football with a 20 degree temperature and minimal wind. Both teams did their best to get players in, which at times meant a lot of penalties and a lot of mistakes. The Huskies capitalized on a Dino miscue in the fourth quarter when Ethan Laing recovered a fumble deep in Dino territory and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

Huskie back up quarterback Griffin Sander threw a late fourth quarter, 13 yard touchdown pass to Dylan Tereck and Cody Gutek then ran one in from a yard out in the final minute to round out Saskatchewan’s scoring.

The Huskies held Calgary to 260 yards in total offense. Jayden Engel, Ruyter Swagar and Charlie Parks each registered sacks. Flory’s overall take….“We got everybody in and accomplished what we wanted to accomplish. We’ve got to clean up a little bit against the run on defense, and offensively we have to run the ball a little bit better.”

The Huskies begin the 2023 regular season Friday September 1st in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons at 6pm at IG Field. Wray Morrison and Rich Gabruch will have the call on the HuskieFAN app, HuskieFAN.ca. Beach Radio 750 and 900 CKBI starting at 5:45pm with the Elk Ridge Resort Pre-Game Show.
