Win streak over Bisons continues

The University of Saskatchewan has extended its win streak to 7 straight games over the Manitoba Bisons dating back to 2019. The Huskies pulled out a 30-27 win on Friday night at IG Field in Winnipeg. The visitors had to dig deep after falling behind 25-7 at the half. Manitoba quarterback Jackson Tachinski used his athleticism and strong arm in putting up three first half majors. De Shawn LeJour, Brendt Adams and AK Gassama all caught touchdown passes. Tachinski finished the night with 13 completions and 208 yards.

Saskatchewan looked like a much different team in the second half. The defense tightened holding the Bisons to just two second half points. Linebacker Lane Novak led the Huskies with eight tackles. Nick Wiebe, John Stoll, Seth Hundeby and Reece McCormick each registered a sack.

Offensively the U of S found its rhythm. Daniel Wiebe caught a four yard pass from quarterback Anton Amundrud to cut Manitoba’s lead to 25-14 in the third quarter. Then, on a play that brought the Huskie bench to its feet, Amundrud hit Daniel Perry on a 90 yard pass and run play with 12:11 remaining in the football game. That cut the Bison advantage to four points. Saskatchewan finally took its first lead of the game when Amundrud connected Daniel Wiebe on a 49 yard touchdown strike to give the visitors a 30-25 lead. Amundrud went 18 for 31 for 313 yards and tossed four touchdown passes.

Bison kicker Vinny DeRosa, who was on the Huskie roster last season, missed two field goals. One from 22 yards out in the first half and a 26 yard attempt in the second half. The Huskies have scored at least 30 points in each of their seven straight wins over the Bisons.

The Huskies home opener is Friday September 8th, when the Regina Rams visit Griffiths Stadium. The Rams fell to the UBC Thunderbirds 25-10 on Friday night while the Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Calgary Dinos 33-9.

The Elk Ridge Resort pre-game show starts at 6:45 with Matt and Wray Morrison on September 8th. The HuskieFAN broadcast, powered play PlayNOW.com, starts at 7pm.
