Huskies hammer Rams in front of over 10,000 fans at Griffiths Stadium
On a night where a Hec Crighton Trophy winner from 50 years ago (Dave Pickett) and a Huskie Vanier Cup championship team from 25 years ago was honoured, the 2023 edition of the U of S football team made sure the celebrations continued on Friday night by stomping the provincial rival Regina Rams, 40-6, at Griffiths Stadium in front of over 10,000 fans in the annual Homecoming Game.
Saskatchewan ended any suspense early as quarterback Anton Amundrud threw three first quarter touchdown passes. After connecting with Branson Pipko on a 10 yard strike mid-way through the opening quarter, the Huskie first year starter then threw back to back touchdown passes to Rhett Vavra to give the home side a 21 point advantage 15 minutes in to the football game. “I challenged the team to make sure that we started fast”, said head coach Scott Flory. “The boys rose to the occasion and made plays. I’m really proud of them.”
Vavra caught a third straight touchdown pass at 7:14 of the second quarter, hauling in a 36 throw from Amundrud. Vavra had 130 yards in receiving on his three touchdown night. Amundrud finished with 391 yards in passing. “It’s all about the o-line and the QB getting me the ball”, said Vavra. “It’s all there. The whole goal today was to start out hot, and don’t get cold.”
The Rams could not recover after falling behind 31-0 at half time. Saskatchewan’s defense had four interceptions (Cam Skinner, Nixen Voll, John Stoll, Reece McCormick) and two quarterback sacks. (Nathan Jule, Charlie Parks) Regina’s only touchdown of the game came on a 3 yard run from Noah Pelletier in the third quarter.
