“They are physical. They are fast.” – Scott Flory on Alberta Golden Bears
Two of the three undefeated teams in Canada West football meet in a head on clash on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium. On the heels a dominating 40-6 home win over the Regina Rams, in front of over 10,000 Saskatchewan supporters last Friday, the Huskies now gear up for a September 15th showdown with the 2 and 0 Alberta Golden Bears.
The Bears are coming off of a 37-16 win over Manitoba from last Friday and defeated the Calgary Dinos 33-9 in the season opener on September 1st. Alberta leads the conference in several categories. The Bears are averaging 536 yards in offense per game, have the best rushing team in the league (238.5/g) and sit on top of the conference in time of possession at 36:16.
Huskie head coach Scott Flory was asked about the Bears performance to date. “Ton of respect”, he said. “They are physical, they are fast, they are going to be well coached, they are going to be detailed in their assignments. There is a fair chunk of similarities in our programs.”
Saskatchewan’s defense had four interceptions last week and hope to be as dominant against an Alberta team that features running back Matt Peterson. The fourth-year tailback from Brooks, Alberta had 99 yards in rushing and one touchdown in the victory over the Dinos. Last week, (vs. Manitoba) Peterson racked up 158 yards on the ground. “He runs hard”, said Flory. “He can move, he can cut. They are a run first team. It’s going to be a test for our defense.”
