Women’s hockey team at home September 22 and 23

Sep 19, 2023 | 2:56 PM

U of S women’s hockey fans in Saskatoon get a first glimpse at the Huskie women’s hockey team this weekend at Merlis Belsher Place. On Friday night, Saskatchewan’s under-18 team will face the U of S in an exhibition game at 7pm. While the provincial team is much younger than the Huskie squad, U of S coach Steve Kook admits they do pose a challenge. “They are so motivated, they just go! That’ll be good for us, because our players have to make reads.”

The Huskies then host the ACAC’s Lakeland Hustlers in another non-conference match-up at 5pm on Saturday afternoon. “They’ve done a very good job of recruiting in the last couple of years”, said Kook. “They’ve recruited 4 or 5 players that could have played USports. The leading scorer from the ACAC (Hailey Corothers) is on the squad. It’ll be a another good test for us.”

Tickets for the September 22nd and 23rd contests are available at https://usask.universitytickets.com/.

The football team visits the Calgary Dinos on Friday night. The Huskies are looking to bounce back following last Friday’s 26-22 set-back to the Alberta Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium. Saskatchewan fell to 2 and 1 with the loss, the Dinos are winless so far this season. The broadcast can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app with the Elk Ridge Resort Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45pm with Rich Gabruch and Wray Morrison. Play-by-play, powered by PlayNOW.com, starts at 6pm.

Second year mid-fielder Nammi Ngugyen was named the Huskie women’s athlete of the week on Tuesday. She scored her first ever goal in a 2-1 soccer win over the TRU WolfPack last Saturday. Saskatchewan puts its 4 and 2 record on the line this weekend with Friday and Saturday road matches in BC against Fraser Valley and Trinity Western.

The 1-3-2 U of S men’s soccer team is in Langley on Friday and Kamloops on Saturday to face Trinity Western and Thompson Rivers. Third year mid-fielder Luke Mackie is the Huskie men’s athlete of the week for his strong defensive play in a win and a tie against UBCO and Victoria last weekend at Griffiths Stadium.
