Coaching adjustments required ahead of Friday’s McMahon match-up with the Dinos

Last season the Huskies outscored the Calgary Dinos by a total of 68-6 in two regular season meetings. The two schools meet in the first of two 2023 matchups on Friday night at McMahon Stadium. The U of C is 0 and 3 this season, suffering setbacks to Alberta, UBC and Regina. Saskatchewan, entering the game at 2 and 1 after a 26-22 loss to Alberta last Friday, is preparing for a Dino team that is “growing” according to head coach Scott Flory.

“They know how to win!”, stated Flory. “They can run, they are athletic. They’re well coached, they are a good football team.” Second year receiver, Gob Deng, leads the Dinos in receiving with 251 yards in receiving in two games this season. “With their speed, we have to be assignment sharp”, said Flory. While the Huskies have won five of the last seven meetings against the Dinos, the success that head coach Wayne Harris has had with the Calgary program is something Flory is very aware of. Prior to 2021, the Dinos hosted 10 straight Hardy Cup games and won seven Canada West titles.

The Huskie boss also believes that he and his staff have to take responsibility for the September 15th, 4-point loss to the Bears. On September 8th the Huskies dominated Regina 40-6 in front of a capacity crowd at Griffiths Stadium. Flory says he didn’t allow for enough mental and physical rest following that emotional contest of provincial rivals in the lead up to the Alberta game. The Bears jumped out to a 20-0 lead and held on for the win.

“I did not manage us well enough to recover”, said Flory. “We didn’t establish the line of scrimmage. We ended up having to put too much on a quarterback in his third (career) start.” Anton Amundrud threw for just 266 yards against the Bears, following a 391 yard passing performance against Regina on September 8th. “I’m not blaming the offensive line, that’s on us as coaches. You’ll see a different football team this week.”
