Huskies overcome early deficit in big victory over Dinos
The Huskie football team leaned on its experienced players in the fourth quarter of Friday night’s 28-12 win over the Calgary Dinos at McMahon Stadium. With the Huskies clinging to a 14-12 fourth quarter lead, 3rd year running back Ryker Frank capped off a 75-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to help the Huskies take a 21-12 lead with 8:35 remaining. On the next possession fourth year tail back, Ted Kubongo, scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach.
The 0-4 Dinos did make the Huskies work for the win. Calgary took an early lead when safety Nate Beauchemin intercepted an errant Anton Amundrud pass and returned it 33 yards for the touchdown in the first quarter. That was the first of three interceptions for Beauchemin on the night. Jacob Biggs had a fourth. Ironically, the Huskies took their first lead of the ball game on a pick six of their own. In the second quarter Nixen Voll scored on a 30-yard interception return to give the Huskies an 11-7 lead…a lead they didn’t give up.
Amundrud, who was making just his fourth conference start for the Huskies, was 20 of 30 for 171 yards with four interceptions. “Not the start we were looking for, but I love to see how our guys bounced back in the second half”, said Amundrud. “Our o-line was pushing it and Ted and Ryker were running the ball so hard. It was really great to see.”
Head coach Scott Flory was quick to point out that Amundrud is not the only one at fault for the interceptions. Protection and route running performance factor in as well. Quarterbacks coach Jeremy Long was with the Huskie pivot through the trials and tribulations of the night. “He comes to me and says keep doing your thing out there. Keep slinging it! Next play! Short term memory”, said Amundrud.
