Two power play goals just seconds apart in the second period proved the difference as the Huskies Women’s Hockey team beat the University of Manitoba Bisons 4-2 on Friday.

In the opening game of a back-to-back series with the Bisons, the Huskies looked strong from the get go, pounding shot after shot against Manitoba goalie Emily Shippam.

Kate Ball would break the ice in the opening period at the 6:25 mark with Sophie Lalor and Taylor Wilkinson assisting.

It would stay 1-0 until the 10 minute mark when Manitoba’s KAte Gregoire tied the game.

The second period started on the power play for the HUskies after Dana Goertzen was penalized for boarding at the end of the first.

Before that advantage was over, the Bisons would find themselves down two players after a slashing call on Jessica Haner.

The Huskies took advantage quickly with Sophie Lalor scoring on the five on three and Kelsey Hall adding another goal five seconds later on the five on four.

Lalor would be credited with the goal that made it 4-1 for the Huskies late in the third period

The Bisons would come to within two goals in the third period after a shot from Sarah Dennehy just trickled past Huskies goalie Camryn Drever. That would be as close as they got as thew Huskies held on for the 4-2 win.

Lalor said after the game that it was great to get the opening win.

“It feels amazing, we’ve just been working so hard throughout training camp. The girls were so fired up and it was great to come away with the win.”

Lalor, who scored on the first power play goal and assisted on the second said they’ve been practicing hard for advantage situations like that.

“I think that we were calm and composed and we were finding each other well. I’m glad that it clicked and I hope we can keep it going.”

Meanwhile, head coach Steve Kook said while Lalor was the star goal scorer, it was really a full team effort.

“They’re a pretty high-poered team when they start rolling,” he said. “You saw players like Jayde Cadieux and Jessica Patterson not play power play or PK but they got minutes, and they were good minutes.”

Hook went on to talk about the season ahead and said the team is looking forward to hosting the USports Championships in March but it’s not a distraction to the team.

“They’re mature enough to set that stuff aside. It’s who we are as part of our year and we’re building towards that.”

The Huskies and Bisons reunite Saturday evening at Merlis Belcher Place.

Lalor admitted that the second game is always tougher.

“We’re expecting the same thing but definitely a push back so we got to get ready for that.
