Huskies visit Griffins in Alberta capital this weekend
The Huskie women’s hockey team plans to take some home ice momentum on the road for the month of October. Saskatchewan opened the season with 4-2 and 4-0 wins over Manitoba last weekend, and now visit the MacEwan Griffins for October 6th and 7th hockey games in Edmonton. “We played well”, said head coach Steve Kook. “There wasn’t a whole lot of holes in our game. I thought our defensive zone play and puck management was really solid.”
Fifth year goaltender Camryn Drever registered both wins, capping off the opening weekend with 24 saves in the 4-0 Saturday night shutout win over the Bisons. “She thought her Saturday night was bang on, and I agree”, said Kook.
Fourth year forward Kate Ball had an outstanding opening weekend on offense, registering 3 points in each game. The line of Ball, Taylor Wilkinson and Sophie Lalor combined for 13 points on opening weekend. “That line stayed intact, pretty much the whole training camp”, said Kook. “There is some chemistry there. They don’t even have to say anything anymore, they kind of know where each other are.”
Newcomer Jacquelyne Chief made an impression during her first weekend of play. The rookie from the Onion Lake Cree Nation was with or around the puck nearly every time she was on the ice on Saturday night. The former PA Bear defender did take two penalties on Saturday, but also made some big plays on the blue line to help the Huskies preserve the shut out. Her head coach was quick to point out her attributes. “She’s such a good skater. She’s still learning the defensive side, but her skating ability allows her to get out of trouble.”
