Bears beat Huskies in walk-off win

Alberta defeats the Huskies for the second time this season

The Alberta Golden Bears have taken a giant step in securing home field advantage for the 2023 Canada West football playoffs. The Bears pulled out a thrilling 23-20 win over the Huskies at Foote Field in Edmonton on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the U of A sole possession of top spot in the conference at 5 and 1, while the Huskies have fallen to 4 and 2, in a 2nd place tie with UBC.

The Bears capped off a 65-yard, 1 minute 7 second drive with a 33-yard Justin Giustini field goal with no time left on the clock for the win. Alberta tailback, Matt Peterson, had a huge 23-yard carry to the Saskatchewan 28-yard line with less than a minute to go to set the stage for the game winning field goal. Peterson, the runaway leader in Canada West rushing, had 22 carries for 175 yards and a touchdown.

Huskie head coach Scott Flory was asked for his team’s take on the game. “I saw a team that had every opportunity to win but didn’t. End of the game scenarios are something we try to replicate, but you can’t until you’re in the game. You can say ‘tip of the cap’ to Alberta for making the plays, but I’m looking at us and saying why didn’t we make those plays?”

Despite having three elite backs dressed for the game, (Ryker Frank, Josh Ewanchyna, Ted Kubongo) the Huskies had just 109 net yards in rushing. “There were too many times when we were in 2nd down and 11 and 2nd and 10”, said Flory. “That puts our quarterback and our receiving corps in a tough situation. We have to, collectively, be better on first down.”

First year Huskie starter, Anton Amundrud, was 18 of 30 for 262 yards with one touchdown and one interception. “We have to come out with more speed”, said Amundrud. Saskatchewan’s lone touchdown toss went to Rhett Vavra (15 yards) in the second quarter. The Huskies also scored a major on the ground thanks to a 2-yard run by Daniel Wiebe in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 20. “We just came out a little flat today”, said the Lloydminster born quarterback. “We started playing from behind. You never want to be behind in a football game.”

Alberta quarterback Eli Hetlinger was 20 of 32 for 261 yards and hit Jonathan Roasery for a 51-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter. Roasery had five catches for 85 yards. Saskatoon product Chase Tataryn had one of three sacks for Alberta’s defense. Giustini, who is also Alberta’s starting safety, had a first quarter interception.

Issues also spilled over to Saskatchewan’s special teams’ unit as well. In the third quarter a pair of Huskie punt returners collided, allowing Morgan Runge of the Bears to pounce on the ball at the Saskatchewan 29 yard-line. Veteran kicker David Solie was 2 for 4 in field goal attempts, missing one from 51 yards in the second quarter and another from 44 yards out in the fourth quarter.

The head coach had his kicker’s back after the game, saying that the play of all three phases of Saskatchewan’s game factored into the loss. “There’s a ton of plays where David shouldn’t have been in that situation”, said Flory. “We support him, we love him. I know he’s sick to his stomach right now. My trust and faith in that young man hasn’t wavered.”

2023 marks the first time since 2004 that Alberta has beaten Saskatchewan twice in one regular season. It was also the last time the Alberta Golden Bears finished in top spot in the Canada West standings.

The Huskies host the 1-5 Dinos on Saturday October 21st at Griffiths Stadium. Wray Morrison and Rich Gabruch will have play-by-play of the game on the free HuskieFAN app starting at 3:45 with the Elk Ridge Resort Pre-Game Show. The broadcast, powered by PlayNOW.com, starts at 4:00.
