The provincial rivalry continues
The Huskie women’s hockey team returns from its bye and now prepares for a home and home series with the Regina Lady Cougars on the October 20-21 weekend. Saskatchewan is 4 and 0 after series wins over Manitoba and MacEwan to start the season.
U of S coach Steve Kook says the bye, after just four games, came at a good time for his team. The Huskies have been patiently waiting for 5th year forward Kennedy Brown to return from injury. Kook confirmed she is getting close. “Our captain is in a red practice jersey”, he said. “She is off of rehab skates and into regular practice, but in a non-contact format. That’s a big step for her.” Brown had 9 points in 18 games last season.
The head coach provided an update on some of the other players that are close to a return as well. “Ava Bergman (1st year forward) has yet to slot into a game, she’s back in a regular practice jersey. Sara Kendall (3rd year forward) had an upper body injury in the last pre-season game. She is back in a regular practice jersey.”
Kook’s top line of Kate Ball, Sophie Lalor and Taylor Wilkinson is off to an incredible start this season. The trio has combined for 16 points in four games, with Lalor sitting at 4 goals and 2 assists in four games. “Sophie shoots so well”, said Kook. “She’s finally getting the breaks. The puck is finding her and she’s in good spots. When she gets a chance, man, she doesn’t need a second one!”
