Huskies host Dinos in final regular season home game on Saturday.
Many in the know in Canadian college football say that the Canada West conference is the toughest league to thrive in. We have seen examples of it this season and with two weeks to go in the regular season, may see evidence of it again. The 4 and 2 Huskies host the 1 and 5 Calgary Dinos on Saturday at 4pm at Griffiths Stadium.
The Dinos have just one win this season, but that 20-6 victory was over the now 4 and 2 UBC Thunderbirds last weekend. Calgary held the T-Birds to less than 110 yards on the ground while limiting the favoured opposition to just one offensive touchdown.
Saskatchewan defeated Calgary 28-12 on September 22nd at McMahon Stadium. Based on that game, and last weekend’s Dino win, the Huskies are preparing for a battle. “They’re a good team, they’re just really young”, said head coach Scott Flory. “They are athletic and they are physical. We felt that in week three when we were there.”
Despite having some injury issues at quarterback, the Dinos have one of the most dangerous weapons in the conference in receiver Gob Deng. The Vancouver product leads Canada West in receiving with 511 yards in six games. Saskatchewan has defensive weaponry to match. Linebacker Nick Wiebe, who is coming off a sensational game against Alberta, leads the conference in tackles (6.9/g) while rookie nose tackle Reece McCormick leads the conference with 3.5 sacks, six games into the season. McCormick, Nathan Jule and George Idoko have combined for 9.5 sacks in 2023.
