Spartans visit campus for men’s hockey weekend

The U of S men’s hockey team puts its unblemished record on the line on October 27th and 28th when the Trinity Western Spartans visit Saskatoon. The Huskies have had their character tested several times this season. They fell behind in three of the games and needed to survive five rounds of a shoot-out in an October 7th win over the MacEwan Griffins.

The coaching staff has been pleased with the determination of the squad six games into the season. “We’ve got that mentality we are going to stick with it”, said Huskie head coach Brandin Cote. No matter what happens early in a game, good, bad or indifferent, we are going to try find a way to come out on top.”

15 players have two points or more so far this season which means offense is coming from multiple sources. “I think it’s been by committee”, said Cote. “There’s not one person that’s standing out in domination, and that’s ok. Our depth is going to be a weapon for us.”

Newcomers are fitting in to the team’s game plan nicely. Centre Raphael Pelletier has 5 points in 6 games, while first year defenceman Cole Jordan is +6 so far this season. “We’ve put a little bit more focus on our team building stuff”, said Cote. “(Players) are engaged in what we are doing in practice. They are staying late after practice in in the gym. They are enjoying each other. That fosters the culture that we want to have here.”

It’s been a challenging start for the Spartans, who are 0 and 6 to start the season. TWU has scored just 11 goals and have allowed 33. Don’t be fooled says Cote. “They are probably the hardest working team in the league. They’re not going to give you much. There are a lot of Saskatchewan players on that team and they are proud to play here. You can’t take them for granted. They will do what ever they can to beat us.”

Game time on Friday night is 7:00pm, the Saturday contest starts at 5:00pm at Merlis Belsher Place.
