Huskies dominate Spartans

Oct 27, 2023 | 9:57 PM

It’s what one might expect when a 0 and 6 team visits a 6 and 0 team. The Huskies rode a 3 goal first period to a 5-0 Canada West men’s hockey win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place. The home side opened the scoring when veteran winger Vince Loschiavo buried the first of two goals on the night at the 4:34 mark of the opening frame. Loschiavo followed up with his fourth of the season at 16:59.

Cade Hayes scored his first goal as a Huskie at 11:58 to put the Huskies up by two. The Eatonia, Saskatchewan product scored on a brilliant assist from veteran Chantz Petruic, who was quick to make sure that Hayes kept the puck as a souvenir.

Dawson Holt scored in the second period while Josh Pillar rounded out the scoring at the 9:24 mark of period three. Roddy Ross faced 23 Spartan shots for the shutout and was forced to make some timely saves.

It was a spirited affair as Saskatchewan had five power play opportunities, Trinity Western had four. Neither team scored on the man advantage. Huskie defenseman Rhett Rhinehart was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a hit to the head at the 17:22 mark of the second period. Saskatchewan’s penalty kill unit was solid, not giving up many short-handed chances.

The 0 and 7 Spartans visit the 7 and 0 Huskies in the second and final game of the series on Saturday night at 5:00pm at Merlis Belsher Place. The game can be hard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca
