Huskies can’t overcome early deficit in loss to Spartans

A slow start and a controversial call proved costly for the Huskies women’s hockey team on Friday as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Trinity Western Spartans in Langley, B.C.

Coming off their first loss of the season last weekend, the Huskies were looking for a quick rebound but instead it was the Spartans who opened the game on the front foot, dictating the pace and using the smaller dimensions of George Preston Arena to their advantage. The home team took away the Huskies’ time and space on a regular basis in the first period, forcing turnovers and creating chances at the other end.

“You put 40 shots on somebody and you can’t help but think you did some good things. We did, but it was just too late,” head coach Steve Kook said. “We were fighting pucks early, playing at the end of our sticks and they were heavier on sticks. That’s a team that’s heavy on sticks, heavy on bodies and they got some loose pucks so that was the difference.”

The Spartans were rewarded for their efforts midway through the opening frame, aided by a goaltending miscue. After Huskies netminder Colby Wilson had a floater from the point fall out of her glove at the side of the net, TWU’s Brook Dorash swooped in, took the loose puck behind the net and fed Katherine Chadwick in front for her first goal as a Spartan. The Huskies outshot the Spartans 16-13 in the frame but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The Dogs began the second on a power play but couldn’t capitalize and just 21 seconds after the Spartans returned to even strength, they doubled their lead with Chloe Reid putting her own rebound past Wilson after a shot off the rush.

Saskatchewan thought they had that one back a couple minutes later as Sophie Lalor dangled around a sprawled TWU goaltender Kate Fawcett before tucking a shot inside the post, but even though the puck appeared to cross the goal line, the play was waved off by the referee down low. After a lengthy discussion between the four officials, the call was upheld, much to Kook’s chagrin.

“That was in the middle of two or three shifts where we had some good forecheck pressure and (if it counts) all of a sudden it’s a 2-1 game with downhill momentum from us,” he said. “From our standpoint it was in, and then there was a quick whistle on a loose puck. The referee told us that she panicked and blew the whistle. How do you have that call at this level?”

It didn’t take long for the Spartans to take advantage of their good break as Chadwick netted her second goal of the game after Wilson mishandled another rebound. That spelled the end of the night for the Huskies netminder, who was replaced by Camryn Drever after conceding three goals on 16 shots.

As the second period wore on the Huskies began to take over but they could not solve Fawcett, who made nine more stops in the middle frame. Before it was over, the Spartans added another as Ella Boon’s point shot beat a screened Drever to make it 4-0 after two.

Saskatchewan dominated the third period, outshooting TWU 14-3. Kelsey Hall eventually beat Fawcett on a power play for her fourth goal of the season to break up the shutout bid but that was as close as the Huskies would get.

For a second straight season, the Huskies dropped the opener of their road series with the Spartans, and just like last season, it’s their first road loss of the year. Now they’re hoping that case of déja vu will extend to the rematch, which they won last season to salvage a split.

Game time on Saturday is at 7 p.m. on the west coast, 8 p.m. in Saskatchewan. Listen on the HuskieFAN app and huskiefan.ca.
