Huskies shut out Spartans for second straight night
It was a historic win for the Huskie men’s hockey team on Saturday night. For the first time in recorded history, the squad has opened a Canada West hockey season with eight straight wins. For the second straight time, Saskatchewan posted a 5-0 win over the Trinity Western Spartans at Merlis Belsher Place. (The Huskies also defeated TWU 5-0 on Friday)
Colby Jacquet kicked off a two-point night with the opening goal at the 3:09 mark of the first period. Huskies’ leading scorer Vince Loschiavo scored the first of two goals with 4:23 to go in the opening frame to lift Saskatchewan to a 2-0 lead. Loschiavo has 10 points in 8 games.
Newcomer Raphael Pelletier continued his hot hand with an unassisted marker in the second period. The U of S first-year centre from Legal, Alberta now has 5 goals in this young season. Loschiavo and Dawson scored third period power goals in a game that was chippy at times. Saskatchewan had nine power play opportunities and there were four sets of coincidental minors in the contest.
Roddy Ross made 23 saves for his second shut-out in as many nights. The Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan product is now 6 and 0 this season. Spartans goaltender, Raphael Audet, was taken out of the game after being shaken up at the 13:27 mark of the first period.
