Standings Dog Fight
“This could be a little bit of a trap weekend!” Huskie women’s hockey coach Steve Kook stresses his team will have to keep its edge this weekend, against a Calgary Dino team that has just 2 victories in 10 games this season. Saskatchewan visits Calgary for the November 10th-11th weekend, after picking up 3 of a possible 4 points against Alberta at home. “They (Dinos) are going to be angry and feisty at home.”
The Huskies sit in third place in the Canada West standings with 15 points, a point behind Alberta, following a November 3rd, 2-0 win and a November 4th, 2-1 overtime loss to the Pandas at Merlis Belsher Place last weekend. “Is it ok for me to be greedy?”, Kook joked. “3 out of 4 points any day against Alberta…we’ll take that, but we were five minutes away from getting 4 points and not giving them any! It’s bittersweet.”
UBC tops the Canada West standings with 22 points, while Mount Royal sits in fourth place with 14. Eight points separate the top four teams (Thunderbirds, Pandas, Huskies, Cougars) as we near the mid-way point of the regular season. “That’s our conference”, said Kook. “You can see it starting to tighten up. As we get going, there will be six jammed at the top.” (The top six teams make the playoffs with the top two teams receiving a bye to the second round, while the third and fourth place teams host first round playoff series.)
The game on Friday November 10th at Father David Bauer Arena starts at 8pm, the November 11th contest starts at 7pm. (Saskatchewan time) Both games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca
