Dinos complete Saskatchewan sweep

For the second straight night the U of S Huskie men’s hockey team fell behind by three goals in the first period and suffered a 5-3 loss to the Calgary Dinos at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday night. The win lifts Calgary in to second place in the Canada West standings, a point up on Saskatchewan. “The ones at the start are tough the last couple of nights”, said head coach Brandin Cote. “It deflates you, right off the bat.” On Friday Calgary jumped out to a 3-0 lead enroute to a 5-2 win.

Arjun Atwal, Adam Kydd (from Regina) and Riley Stotts scored to give Calgary an early 3-0 advantage. The Huskies showed some push-back in the middle frame when Cade Hayes put the home side on the board at the 6:50 mark. Saskatchewan then struck on the power play as veteran Justin Ball found the net with 5:05 left in the 2nd period to cut the Dino lead to one. However, Dylan Anderson beat Huskie goaltender Jordan Kooy with less than 3 minutes to go in the second period and Calgary took a two-goal lead to the dressing room.

Dino forward Jake Poole put the game out of reach with an early third period goal on the power play. Saskatchewan’s Carter Stebbings scored a late goal that officials initially waived off, but after consultation ruled good. The Huskies outshot Calgary 34-32.

“What I did like was, we had some push back”, said Cote. “We had opportunities to win the game. (Calgary) is a good team, they came in here with a plan and they stuck to it. If anything, I take the positives out of it. It also gives us a measuring stick as to where we need to get to.”

The Huskies were forced to make several adjustments to their line up due to injury. Centre Liam Keeler, who dressed on Friday night, was ill and was a last-minute scratch on Saturday. That was just the start of it. “We had guys dropping like flies today”, said Cote. “I was juggling like you wouldn’t believe. I think we lost a full line up front, and a defenseman in the back.” One of those injured was centreman Keaton Sorenson who was down on the ice for several minutes before behind helped to the dressing room.

After opening the season with nine straight wins, the Huskies have dropped three straight games and now visit the 11 and 1 UBC Thunderbirds on the November 17th-18th weekend in Vancouver. Games start at 9:00 pm (Friday) and 5:00 pm (Saturday) and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca.
