Huskies drop final game before break

The best power play in the Canada West proved too much for the Huskies women’s hockey team to handle in a 5-2 loss to the Mount Royal Cougars to wrap up the first semester schedule on Saturday.

The Cougars scored on their first three power play chances of the game, providing all the goals they would need to earn a split of the weekend series in Calgary. Mount Royal’s top-ranked unit, which entered the night producing at a nearly 27 per cent clip, finished the game three-for-five, punishing a Huskies penalty kill unit that came in ranked second in the conference at 90.9 per cent.

Mount Royal wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Athena Hauck split a pair of defenders to get in alone and slid the Cougars first shot of the game past Huskies goaltender Colby Wilson just 2:02 into the opening period.

The home side doubled its lead later in the frame on its first power play of the game when Emma Bergesen wristed a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net. The Cougars would take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, outshooting the Huskies 11-9 through 20 minutes of play.

Much like a night earlier when they rallied from a slow start, the Huskies started the second period strong and at the 2:34 mark, Jacquelyne Chief fired a low shot that eluded MRU goalie Kaitlyn Ross for her first career U SPORTS goal to bring Saskatchewan back within one.

But this time, the comeback effort stopped there. After Makenna Stevens was sent to the box for hooking, the Cougars made quick work of the ensuing power play with Breanne Trotter scoring to restore the two-goal lead.

The Huskies penalty kill troubles continued late in the period. After back-to-back infractions gave the Cougars a 5-on-3 advantage, Bergesen tallied her second goal of the night to make it 4-1 Mount Royal after two.

MRU added a little more insurance early in the third as Cougars captain Lyndsey Janes potted her second goal in as many nights. The Huskies would get that one back on a power play of their own when Sara Kendall netted her first goal of the season with less than three minutes left in the game, but that is as close as they would get, falling by the same score which had been in their favour the night before.

The Cougars outshot the Huskies 24-20 on the night. Wilson made 15 saves through 40 minutes before being replaced by Camryn Drever in the third period. Kaitlyn Ross stopped 18 shots to earn her conference-leading 11th win of the season as the Cougars improved to 14-4, restoring their six-point lead over Saskatchewan in the standings. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 10-4-2. The teams will meet again February 2 and 3 in Saskatoon.

The Dogs now have just over a month off before their next game, against the Regina Cougars on January 5 at Merlis Belsher Place.
