Huskies blank Cougars

A win is a win however Huskie head coach Steve Kook didn’t hide his concern following Friday night’s 3-0 victory over the Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. “It wasn’t a very good game for us”, he said. The visitors outshot Saskatchewan 30-24. “We fought the puck all night tonight. We were lucky to get a couple early.”

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals in a span of one minute and 13 seconds late in the first period. 3rd year Huskie, Mallory Dyer, scored at 16:02. 1st year defender, Jacuelyne Chief, followed up with a goal at the 17:15 mark. 5th year forward, Kara Kondrat, added an empty net goal with 1:45 remaining in the third period.

Kook not only pointed to his players being on the wrong side of pucks but also commented on his team’s lack of focus at times. “We took some stupid penalties”, he said. Saskatchewan took 3 of 4 minor penalties in the second period and took an unsportsmanlike minor in the final frame. “It was undisciplined stuff we didn’t need to do. We almost killed ourselves there.”

5th year Huskie goaltender, Camryn Drever, who has the best save percentage in Canada West hockey, made some spectacular stops, particularly in the second period. “Most of the first (period) and all of the second, it was the ‘Cam Show’”, said Kook. Drever has 10 wins in 15 games this season. Cougar goaltender, Arden Kliewer, from Saskatoon, made 21 saves.

The Huskies now sit four points behind third place Mount Royal in the Canada West standings with a game in hand. Regina’s record fell to 5-12-1-1 with the loss. The second game of the Huskie-Cougar series is Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm at the Brandt Centre in Regina and can be heard on the HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca.
