The favoured Huskies had to dig deep to pull out a 2-1 Canada West women’s hockey victory over the Trinity Western Spartans at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. The Spartans, who outshot the Huskies 19-15 after the first 40 minutes of play, opened the scoring when Jordyn Matthews scored her 4th goal of the season at the 6:29 mark. It took some time for the home side to respond. 4th-year Huskie, Kate Ball, scored her 5th of the season in the final minute of the first period to tie the game at 1-1.

Trinity Western outshot the Huskies 10-5 in a scoreless second period. Veteran goaltender Camryn Drever made a number of big saves for Saskatchewan throughout the hockey game as the Spartans generated sustained pressure on several occasions. The game winning goal came on the power play as 3rd year Huskie, Mallory Dyer, beat Spartan goaltender Kate Fawcett at 4:58 of the third period. It was Dyer’s 7th goal of the season. Saskatchewan was 1 for 4 on the power play, Trinity Western was 0 for 1.

Two of Trinity Western’s best chances came while they were shorthanded with about 8 minutes remaining in the third period but Drever, who made 25 stops on the night, held the Spartans at bay with key stops for her 11th win in her 16th game of the season. Spartan goaltender Kate Fawcett turned aside 23 Saskatchewan shots.

Saskatchewan, now 13-4-1-1 on the season, remains in 4th place in the Canada West standings, two points back of Mount Royal. The Cougars defeated the Manitoba Bisons 5-2 on Friday night. The second game of the Spartan-Huskie series is set for Saturday afternoon at 5:00 pm at Merlis Belsher Place and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca.
