The Montreal Carabins (7) upset the second-seeded UBC Thunderbirds, 4-2, in the third quarter-final of the 2024 GFL U SPORTS women’s hockey championships, presented by Connect Energy on Friday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place. The game was tied at 1-1 through two periods. Montreal’s Mylene Lefebvre scored at 6:58 of the first period, UBC responded with a Cassidy Rhodes goal five minutes later.

Both teams had chances in a scoreless second period. UBC’s Grace Elliott was awarded a penalty shot at the 8:59 mark, but could not put the puck past Carabins goaltender, Aube Racine, who made 24 saves for the win. The Thunderbirds then took 3 straight penalties, (14:45, 16:45 and 18:43) however Montreal’s power play could not capitalize, although Justine Pelletier rang a shot off the post with 10 seconds remaining in the period. The Carabins were 0-for-7 on the power play on the night.

At the 1:08 mark of the final frame the Carabins took the lead on an even strength goal from Joannie Garand, who beat Thunderbird goaltender Elise Hugens with a shot from the right wing. Just over a minute later the T-Birds evened the score again, while the Carabins were short-handed, as Sophia Gaskell tied the game at 2-2.

Second-year defender, Jade Picard, who was named Montreal’s player of the game, capped off a three-point effort with the eventual game winning marker with 6:20 remaining. After Hugens made a big save, the rebound came right to Picard’s stick, and she made no mistake. Laurie Anne-Ethier rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal with 2:01 remaining.

The Carabins will face the Toronto Varsity Blues in Saturday’s semi-finals at 7:00 pm at Merlis Belsher Place.

In another upset the University of Toronto (6) defeated the UNB Reds (3) 2-1 in the last quarter-final of the tournament on Thursday night. Shortly after killing off a Reds powerplay, the Blues got on the board at 12:32 of the opening period, as first-year forward Ashley Delahey scored the game’s first goal. The Reds responded less than a minute later, as defender Mackenzie Keenan’s quick shot found its into the Blues net.

After a scoreless second period, play opened up in the third. The game winning goal came late. Blues veteran Sophie Grawbarger took a pass from teammate Caroline Eagles at her own blue line, then made a series of nice moves before scoring on the backhand with 2:21 remaining.

Erica Fryer got the win with a 16 save performance. Reds goaltender, Kendra Woodland, turned aside 20 Blues shots.

UNB will face UBC in the second consolation semifinal on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
