Huskies advance to consolation final
The disappointment of a Thursday night loss to Concordia seemed so long ago. The Huskie women’s hockey team rebounded with a 3-1 win over the St. FX X-Women on Saturday morning at the 2024 USports women’s hockey championships. The consolation semi-final victory took on added meaning when 3rd-year defender, Brooklyn Stevely, scored a 2nd period power play goal.
The 21-year-old Regina product was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last fall and battled through surgeries and treatments in time for a return to the national championships. The Saskatchewan bench erupted when Stevely buried a wrist shot at the 6:06 mark of the middle frame to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
“I thought I had the chills on Thursday night, but I think these chills beat those chills”, she said. Stevely was asked about her teammate’s response to the moment. “There was a hug when the goal happened, a hug on the ice for being named player of the game, a hug from the whole team in the dressing room and a hug from every player. I feel the love for sure. There is no other group of girls that I could have gone through this journey with.”
Head coach Steve Kook was asked for his reaction to the goal. “I saw it go in and said to (assistant coach Christine Bumstead) please tell me no one tipped that. (Stevely) was a little teary eyed and a little emotional. We’re just happy for her.” Stevely was asked about keepsakes from the game. “I got the puck with our slogan on it. Ill keep that one forever.”
