…and the awards go to….

Huskie Athletics announced the annual Salute award winners on Thursday night. Several members from the Saskatchewan Huskies were recognized for their contributions to university’s respective programs for the 2023-24 season.

The Colb McEown Trophy, for Coach of the Year, was awarded to Huskie women’s basketball coach Lisa Thomaidis. In her 25th season as coach, Thomaidis led the Huskies to a 9th Canada West title and a silver medal at the U SPORTS championships. Thomaidis was named the Canada West Coach of the Year for the 6th time and the nation’s top coach for the 3rd time in her career.

Wrestler, Abby Wolff, put her name on the Pat Lawson Trophy as Outstanding Female Rookie. Wolff won a gold medal at the Canada West championships and was named the conference’s rookie of the year. Wolff also claimed a silver medal in the 50 kg class at the U SPORTS championships in Guelph.

The Howard Nixon Trophy for Outstanding Male Rookie was given to Easton Thimm, a first year forward on the men’s basketball team. The Holy Cross graduate was the Huskies’ second-leading scorer with 195 total points in the 2023-24 season.

Calgary product, Carly Ahlstrom, claimed the Valerie Girsberger Trophy as the school’s top All-Round Female Athlete. The fifth year forward finished 13th on the Huskie women’s basketball team’s all-time scoring list and played a key role in 4 Canada West titles and the 2020 U SPORTS championship.

The Rusty MacDonald Cup, for All-Round Male Athlete, went to Alex Dewar. The Saskatoon product is third on the Huskie men’s basketball all-time scoring list with 1538 points. Dewar is a 5-time U SPORTS academic all-Canadian was the winner of the Canada West

community service award and the U SPORTS Ken Shields award.

Huskie women’s hockey goaltender Camryn Drever was awarded the Mary Ethel Cartwright Trophy as the university’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete. Drever, from Edmonton, set a program record with 15 regular season wins in the 2023-24 Canada West season. Camryn also had the best save percentage in the nation and was a 2nd-team all-Canadian.

Third year linebacker, Nicke Wiebe, was named the school’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete. The business major won the E. Kent Phillips Trophy following a sensational 2023 football season in which he led the conference in tackles and was third in the country. It’s the third straight time that a football player has claimed the trophy. Quarterback Mason Nyhus won the award in 2023, while running back Adam Machart did the same in 2022.

The Dr. Walter Hader Award, given to the Student Trainer of the Year, went to Ella McLean for work with the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
