On Thursday, Huskie head coach Scott Flory announced that Jeremy Long has been promoted to offensive coordinator after serving as an offensive assistant with the program for 7 seasons. Long was Saskatchewan’s quarterback coach from 2018 to 2022, working with starters Kyle Siemens, all-Canadian Mason Nyhus and current starter Anton Amundrud.

The Calgary product played high school and junior football in Calgary before joining the Huskie roster in 2014 and 2015, while getting an undergraduate and master’s degree from the College of Education.

Long is excited for the new role in what will be a collaborative effort. “Coach Flory (who has served as offensive coordinator since 2014) is still going to very much involved,” he said. “We are at our best when he is involved in our offense.”

After winning 2021 and 2022 Canada West titles and making back-to-back Vanier Cup appearances, the Huskies were eliminated by Alberta in the Canada West semi-finals last season. Flory, Long and the rest of the coaching staff have been working hard to prepare for 2024.

Long says it’s important not to put too much on Amundrud as the Lloydminster pivot prepares for his second season as starter. “We (the quarterbacks) just have to distribute the football and be point guards on the football field”, he said. Amundrud threw for over 2,400 yards last season with 14 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. “We don’t have to launch it 60 yards every play. We just have to get guys in space so they can play well.”

The 2024 season officially starts on Thursday, May 2nd, with the annual Staybridge Suites & Holiday Inn Express University Dogs’ Breakfast at Prairieland Park. Spring camp starts that evening and runs through until Sunday May 5th at Griffiths Stadium.

Long spoke with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison about his expanded role on the U of S football coaching staff.
