Remembering some great Dog’s Breakfasts

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton joins an impressive list of guest speakers for the 2024 Staybridge Suites & Holiday Inn Express University Dogs’ Breakfast at Prairieland Park. The May 2^nd sold out event, which raises scholarship money for U of S Huskie football program, has featured several star-studded celebrities from the world of football since 2000.

TSN analyst and former Saskatchewan Roughrider, Glen Suitor, has been the emcee of the Staybridge Suites & Holiday Inn Express University Dogs’ Breakfast since 2005. “It’s just an amazing list”, Suitor said. “Think about it. George Reed and Ron Lancaster were guest speakers at this! When you look at some of the biggest names in the National Football League…Warren Moon was a speaker, Jeff Garcia, and one of my personal favourites, not all that long ago, was Ronnie Lott. Some of those names really stand out.”

Suitor says it’s also important to recognize Saskatchewan Roughrider success at the breakfast. In 2007, Ron Lancaster spoke about the 1966 Grey Cup championship. In 2019 members of the 1989 team reminisced about the Riders’ second Grey Cup title. Two years ago, Andy Fantuz, current Rider GM, Jeremy O’Day, Tad Kornegay and Scott Schultz told stories about the 2007 victory over Winnipeg. In 2014, Darian Durant and Geroy Simon shared experiences from Saskatchewan’s fourth Grey Cup title from 2013.

“I think the Rider champions have been equally as important”, Suitor said. “They are equally as big in name because they brought home a cup. It’s special when the province of Saskatchewan has a chance to celebrate the game that they love and with the team that they love.”

Over 1,400 ticket buyers also witness the annual introduction of recruits into the program. More than 20 players, many straight out of high school, begin their U SPORTS football career by hearing Suitor call their name as they cross the stage to receive a Huskie jersey from head coach Scott Flory. “It is my favourite part of the show”, said Suitor. “I see it in their eyes, I can see the hunger. I can see the excitement and the nervousness as they join their team. There will be bonds built that will last a lifetime.”

Suitor, who played his college football at Simon Fraser, has been the emcee for 17 of the 22 Staybridge Suites & Holiday Inn Express University Dogs’ Breakfasts. When asked how long he will serve as emcee, he simply said, “I’m happy to help at any time, in any way. The day that someone else takes over, I will probably buy a ticket anyway!”
