It was a big week for several U of S Huskie football players. On Monday the Riders announced the signing of defensive back, Katley Joseph. The Ottawa product joined the University of Saskatchewan in 2022 after playing college football at the University of Maine. Joseph, who played both corner back and defensive half-back in his two seasons with the U of S, had four U SPORTS career interceptions and helped the team advance to the 2022 Vanier Cup.

Three Huskies were selected in Tuesday’s CFL draft. Linebacker Nick Wiebe was chosen in the second round by the Roughriders. Wiebe, who played in 31 games over three seasons at the U of S, led Canada West with 77 tackles in 2023. “His skill set will lead to an immediate impact in the CFL”, said Huskie head coach Scott Flory. “I think he can grow in to an every down linebacker. It’s a pick that any team would be super privileged to have. He will be around for a long time.”

U of S defensive lineman, George Idoko, returns to his hometown of Calgary for CFL camp after being selected in the third round by the Stampeders. “He plays with a physical edge”, said Flory. He’s a phenomenal teammate and loves the game.” In four seasons with the Huskies, Idoko was part of two Hardy Cup winning teams (2021-2022) and was a Canada West all-star in 2023.

Offensive lineman, John Kourtis, was a 7th round pick by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Toronto native joined the U of S after playing at Liberty University in Virginia. At 6’4” and 307 pounds, Kourtis made a successful transition from guard to centre last season. “He’s a big strong guy with long arms and good hands”, said Flory. “He’s a communicator with good presence. He’s a leader. He’ll be a really good centre at the CFL level.”

18 Canada West players were chosen in Tuesday’s Canadian Football League draft. CFL rookie camps begin on May 8th. Main camps starts on May 12th.
