Huskies gear up for season opener against the Bisons
The Huskie football team now zeros in on its 2024 regular season following Thursday night’s 42-16 non-conference victory over the Alberta Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium. Saskatchewan head coach Scott Flory is happy with his team’s trajectory after losing three times to the U of A last season. “It gets that bad taste out of our mouth. It (the game) gave us a chance to iron out what we needed to, going into week one.
The veterans from both schools played most of the first half. Huskie quarterback Anton Amundrud, who is now a second-year starter, was 11 of 12 for 98 yards and two touchdowns. “I think Anton operated great”, said Flory. Amundrud looked comfortable in a hurry-up offense drive early in the game. “I wanted to get some of that hurry up stuff in and with the new helmet communication, it’s really great.
Five different Huskie quarterbacks threw for a total of 356 yards as Griffin Sander and Jake Farrell followed Amundrud before Eli Flory and Cohen Wright took snaps later in the game. “I thought all the quarterbacks played really well”, said Flory. “ We are going to have a tough decision on who is number two.”
Newcomer Javin Boynton showed his skill from the backfield with 82 yards rushing on 12 carries. The Moose Jaw product proved he has big play capability. “It felt great”, he said. “I think this offense is great, our line showed that we can pound the ball. My mindset is to just get better every day. I want to be travelling and help the team out.” The coaches believe Boynton will have a major impact on this offense. “He’s going to be a special player”, said Flory.
