The schedule is favourable but the record is not. The Huskie football team has four of its final six regular season games at Griffiths Stadium, but Saskatchewan is 0 and 2 after road losses to Manitoba and Regina to start the season. The Huskies also started the 2015 and 2002 seasons with 0 and 2 starts. The ’02 team finished with a 4 and 4 record and advanced all the way to the Vanier Cup. When given that history lesson head coach Scott Flory joked, “If you look deep enough, history can repeat itself.”

The Huskies are looking forward to settling into Griffiths Stadium for Friday’s annual ‘Homecoming Game’ against Calgary. The Dinos are 1 and 1, posting their first win of the season over provincial rival, Alberta, 36-22. The U of C’s defense scored all three of their touchdowns on first half pick-sixes.

In falling behind early in both games, the Huskies have had been forced to utilize the run game a little less and try to move the ball through the air more. “We’ve attempted one field goal in two games!”, Flory said. “We aren’t getting into the red zone very much.” The head coach says the Huskies have to dictate play in order to have success. Last season the Huskies averaged over 134 yards on the ground per game. This season the Huskies are rushing for under 100 yards per contest.

Flory says the team has had a good week of practice and is focusing on…next play.

“We ride the lows too long and that’s the sign of an immature team”, he said. “We don’t ride the highs long enough. Just play the next play. If we can do that, it’ll free us up to play faster and be more physical. We’ve just got to keep fighting. That’s the thing with this group…they’re scrappy.”

Flory chatted with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison on the September 11th edition of The Coach’s Show.
