Undefeated Herd visit U of S campus for Friday Night Football

The Huskies are hoping to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season as the (5-0) Manitoba Bisons visit Griffiths Stadium on Friday night. Saskatchewan (2-3) enters the game on a winning note after pulling out a 33-30 win over Alberta last weekend. Trailing by 16 in the second half, the U of S put up 19-fourth quarter points and won the game on a Lukas Scott 47-yard field goal in the final minute.

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster from a performance standpoint”, said head coach Scott Flory. “I’m really proud of our guys, that we didn’t quit.” The composure of veterans and young players alike played a role in the win according to Flory and may serve the team well going forward. “You need some adversity to learn…the key is to learn. You try not to get too high and you try not to get too low. You want to make sure when things are going your way you keep building on that. When they’re not, take a deep breath and reset.”

Huskie quarterback Anton Amundrud leads Canada West in passing with a 286.2/game average, while Daniel Wiebe tops the conference with a 109/game average in receiving Defensively, no team has allowed more points than the Huskies, however the move to start more veterans in the secondary paid off in the fourth quarter against Alberta.

The Bisons defeated the Huskies 37-24 on August 31^st in Winnipeg as fourth year running back Breydon Stubbs rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Manitoba has seven interceptions and six sacks in their five contests this season. “They’ve got weapons in every phase”, said Flory. “Two or three of their games have gone down to the last minute. They are a good football team because they are finding ways to win.”

Flory says the close games mean there is no one dominant team in Canada West, even though Manitoba is undefeated. “Nobody is running away with in this conference”, he said. “Understand they’ve got to play us too. We feel like we’ve got a good football team here that’s won a lot of football games. That’s a positive for us.”
