Huskies hand Bisons first defeat of season

“We didn’t make it about them, we made it about us.” That was Huskie head coach, Scott Flory’s, reaction following Saskatchewan’s 42-24 win over previously unbeaten Manitoba at Griffiths Stadium on Friday night.

A 24-point second quarter was too much for the Bisons to overcome. Ryker Frank, who finished with 163 yards on the ground, capped off a 75-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to make it 11-0. Seven minute later, receiver Dawson Lennea scored on an 86-yard pass and run play as he caught the ball near mid-field and dashed to the endzone to make it 18-0. “I was just trying to be around the ball”, Lennea said. “It was a nice break for me and then I just used my speed.”

Receiver Branson Pipko hauled in a six-yard pass from U of S quarterback Anton Amundrud in the final minute of the second quarter as the Huskies took a commanding 28-3 lead to the dressing room. Amundrud finished the night with 293 yards in passing and two touchdowns.

Manitoba didn’t score a touchdown until the third quarter when running back Breydon Stubbs scored the first of two majors 5:48 in the second half. Stubbs had 95 yards in rushing and another touchdown in the fourth quarter. Bison quarterback Jackson Tachinski helped cut the Saskatchewan lead to 10 with a five-yard run on the heels of a 95-yard drive late in the ball game. Saskatchewan, however, put the game out of reach as Frank scored on a 55-yard run with 2:31 remaining.

Saskatchewan’s defense, which came into the game with just one sack and no interceptions in five games, turned in their best performance of the season. Veterans Katley Joseph and Ethan Laing had interceptions while Seth Hundeby sacked quarterback Jackson Tachinski. First-year linebacker Jacob Goldstone, from Regina, had 6.5 tackles. “That kid has a bright future”, Flory said. “He is just so talented. He just feels the game and he’s got a work ethic where he is going to get better.”

In other Canada West action on Friday night, UBC downed Alberta 35-25. Manitoba fell to 5 and 1 with the loss to the Huskies, while the Thunderbirds improved to 4 and 2. Saskatchewan is 3 and 3, while Alberta is now 2 and 4.

The Huskies host the Regina Rams on Friday, September 27th at Griffiths Stadium. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
